Itinerary
**Day 1 | Fort William to Gairlochy | 11 miles (17km)** We meet at the Fort William train station at 1 pm to begin our adventure. This gives you time to travel up from Glasgow or to explore Fort William for the morning. After sorting out your baggage transfer we hit the trail. After briefly following the River Lochy we explore the ancient Old Inverlochy castle and then say goodbye to the Atlantic at Corpach. We follow the Caledonian Canal past Neptune’s staircase and then on towards Gairlochy. The afternoon is dominated by views of Ben Nevis, which towers in the background.
**Day 2 | Gairlochy to South Laggan | 13 miles (21 km)** The Great glen begins to close in around us as we leave Gairlochy and follow the shore of Loch Lochy. This is Clan Cameron land and their museum at Achnacarry gives us an insight into the history of the area. We continue past ancient battlefields and magical scenery towards the Laggan Lochs and the hamlets of North and South Laggan.
**Day 3 | South Laggan to Invermoriston | 16 miles (25 km)** Our day starts at Laggan Bridge, the highpoint of the Caledonian Canal at 106ft above sea level. We follow the Eastern shore of Loch Oich through pristine natural woodland, which is teeming with bird and wildlife. Once we reach the end of Loch Oich at Oich Bridge we follow the canal for a few miles along to Fort Augustus, a busy little town well known for its Benedictine Abbey and a great spot for a relaxed lunch. After lunch we leave the canal and begin our journey on the banks of Loch Ness, home of the Loch Ness Monster, the views are fantastic and you might even be rewarded with a sighting of Nessie.
**Day 4 | Invermoriston to Drumnadrochit | 12 miles (19 km)** We climb steeply out of Invermoriston and are rewarded with breathtaking views over Loch Ness and the surrounding peaks. Forest paths on the steep sides of the glen take us to our next destination, Drumnadrochit. The ruins of Urquhart Castle guard the banks of Loch Ness and are the perfect location for sundowners and several Loch Ness exhibitions in the village give a fascinating insight into the myth and mystery of the monster. The local watering spots give the finishing touches to a great overnight stop.
**Day 5 | Drumnadrochit to Inverness | 18 miles (29 km)** The toughest day of the way starts with a short sharp climb out of Drumnadrochit and then we have a varied day of forest paths and fine views. The way draws to an end with a descent into Inverness and finishes at Inverness Castle in the highland capital.
Inverness is a busy city with numerous attractions and things to do, not least of which is to celebrate our achievement with a few beers.
