Built round a sunken area, which is the comfortable sitting room, where the tops of the armchairs are on a level with the rest of the house. Through the open front door from the interior, with the sea beckoning you, you will find the extended verandah and bar area. Always cool - in both northern and southern monsoons - unless you want up the Pokomo matting shelter which allows the breeze through yet filters the tropical sun.
A local stone has been used called maji chumvi, quite a misnomer really for that means salt water! However, this comes from 12 miles (18 Kms) away, in the hinterland, adjoining the area from where Italians quarry their marble resembling that of their homeland. The bedrooms are all en suite. Two are seafacing, while the third is in the shade of a magnificent large-leafed Indian Almond. Furnishings include Hotel standard mattresses, pretty curtains, mosquito net, and Digo mat woven in traditional palm material with natural dyes. A choice of fresh air, fan or air conditioning is yours when you sleep, siesta or relax. In the bedrooms you may turn on hot or cold running water for your shower.
After turning into the drive and parking under the shady Indian Almond tree, the staff will come and greet you, taking you through the Lamu door, to say Karibu (welcome) The sandy beach, full of little shells, is abosolutely safe for children. At low tide they may play in the small natural pools fromed by the coral.
Out to sea, slightly north to Renu Villa, is Chale Island, a place of ancient rituals, while to the south is Wasini Island and the famous Pemba Channel, the best in the world for deep sea fishing. Should you desire a boat you may contact the fishermen, who will willingly take you round locally.
