Located 12 miles north of San Francisco, Muir Woods is one of the most spectacular sights in the San Francisco Bay Area containing some of the TALLEST TREES ON THE PLANET.
The Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) is one of the tallest tree species in the world and one was even declared the tallest living thing by the National Geographic Society in 1963 measuring 367.8 feet (100+ meters) tall. Some of the Redwoods in the park have tree trunks over 14 feet in diameter and are over over 1,000 years old.
Sonoma is one of California''s premier wine making regions yet it has remained relatively untouched by tourists compared to its more popular neighbor, Napa Valley (only 5 miles apart). It is said that Sonoma Valley gets its name from the Miwok Native American Indians. The Miwok named it the valley or ''many moons'' while on their walk through the Sonoma and the Mayacama mountains the moon was said to raise seven times.
During our Wine Country Tour we stop at one of the most famous landmarks in the world, The Golden Gate Bridge. We stop in a less frequently visited vista point to get one of the most spectacular views of The Golden Gate Bridge that makes for incredible photo opportunities.
We typically visit three wineries on our tour and sometimes more depending on the time, the weather, the stars, etc. The wineries that we visit are small and less comercial providing a more personal experience.
Declared a national historic landmark, downtown Sonoma and the San Francisco Solano Mission are at the heart of this renowned wine producing region. Initially constructed as a Mexican outpost established to protect the country''s territory, it was overtaken by American frontiersmen in 1846 and briefly became the capital of The Bear Flag republic during the Bear Flag revolt and shortly thereafter joined the union. Consequently, Sonoma was the first place ever to fly today''s state Flag.
