Pyramids and Playas
This sample itinerary is a general overview. We cannot guarantee any one destination or activity. Driver has authority to adjust it according to weather or any other conditions to give you the best and safest possible trip. The Green Tortoise reserves the right to adjust our itineraries at any time.

These Tours are some of the most adventurous we run. We bring you to beautiful places; rain forests and cloud forests, pristine beaches and crystal clear rivers, sleepy little towns and busy cities. When we arrive at these places it will be up to you to explore them. Sometimes there will be options for activities to choose from and other times we are there to merely enjoy and absorb the environment around us. These are self-service vacations. The drivers organize most of the menu but everyone is expected to help cook and clean up. At times you will be required to make your own arrangements for guided walks, boat trips, etc. Of course we will help you however we can.

Days One through Three: After our pick-up in Cancun at 9AM, we are off to the town of Valladolid and the hidden swimming hole at Cenote Ditznip. This underground ancient “cenote” will baptize you for the adventure ahead!

We arrive at the ruins of Chichen-Itza with plenty of time to discover the site. These ruins speak for themselves as the capital of the Maya Empire at its climax. From the Sacred Cenote where many people and treasures were sacrificed to the rain god, to El Castillo with its precise astral orientation, these ruins will spark your enthusiasm for the archeological complexities the ancient Mayan peoples left behind.

After dinner a la Tortoise, you can also re-enter for the famous light show! The following day finds us at the ruins of Uxmal, host to some of the best restorations of pyramids and masks in the region. The House of Turtles awaits you!

Days Four through Seven: Merida, once considered the center of the universe by the Maya, remains a busy metropolis today. Experience both ancient and modern Mexico by exploring this historical city''s anthropology museum, zocolo, and cathedral. Consider buying a hammock to hang between the many palm trees that beckon you!

Next, cool off in the mountain setting of San Cristobal de las Casas. The indigenous influence in this region reminds us that the Maya/Mestizo culture is still very much alive in Mexico. By day, meander through the market and zocolo; and by night, discover San Cristobal’s many unique cafes, restaurants, and clubs.

The stunning and dramatic waterfalls of Agua Azul await you for a recovery from the night''s festivities.

Days Eight Through Eleven: At Agua Azul, you can absorb the ultimate jungle experience at our riverside camp by exploring the river from the headwaters to the remote lower falls. In Palenque, if you feel you have seen enough ruins, this site will re-inspire you! The setting and restoration of the pyramids are unmatched.

Calakmul, on the way to the Caribbean, are ruins which have only recently been discovered and are still well off the “gringo” trail. As many of the pyramids at this site have yet to be excavated, this location will spur your imagination and heighten your appreciation of the before-and-after process of excavation itself! Be sure to hike to the top of the main pyramid for sunset, where you will leave serenaded by monkeys, parrots and toucans as this magical day comes to an end.

Days Twelve through Fourteen: An early morning arrival in Tulum will allow you to visit these popular beachside ruins before the crowds arrive. The following day we are off to the jungle ruins of Coba. Camp under Caribbean skies for your final night, before ending our trip in Cancun.

Once you have booked with us, we will send you a thorough information package to help you plan and pack for this expedition. As you have probably realized, this trip will require you to organize your own transportation to and from Cancun. We highly recommend Exito Travel for airline tickets at 1-800-655-4053 or 510-655-2154 (ask for Emma).
Other Considerations for Maya Trail Travelers

The People and their Country: Mexico has incredibly friendly locals steeped in a unique and rich history. Many people will go out of their way to help visitors or just to strike up friendly conversation. You will find the cultural experience very rewarding with participation, respect, and common sense.

Camping Out: We will be camping out quite a bit on these trips and we do not provide tents. As such, we highly encourage people to bring a small, easy-to-assemble tent. Not only do they provide privacy and sanctuary when in the great outdoors, but also protection from elements such as wind and sand.

Why Green Tortoise? You may be thinking; the place is beautiful, the locals are friendly, why don’t I pack a bag and do it on my own? This is possible and thousands do it every year. However, by traveling with us, you can leave the hassles of public buses, car rentals, and lodging details behind. We have been running these Tours for 22+ years, and our experience provides you with a greater knowledge of the country, an increased level of security, and most importantly, access to destinations, people and experiences that you would never find on your own!
