Adelaide to Alice Springs A land beyond… Outback Exposed takes the back roads ‘less travelled’, venturing into the Desert Parks region of South Australia’s Far North. Highlights include the Flinders Ranges, Oodndatta Track, Coober Pedy, the Breakaways, Moon Plain, Painted Desert, Oodnadatta township, Dalhousie Hot Springs on the edge of the Simpson Desert, the Fink River, Lambert Centre, Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon.
**Day 1 – Adelaide to Wilpena Pound** (LD) Clare Valley and Flinders Ranges... From Adelaide, the most interesting way north includes the hillside vineyards of the Clare Valley plus a string of little country towns. Enjoy extensive views of the Flinders Ranges as we approach Wilpena Pound, one of Australia’s most spectacular natural features. Camp tonight.
**Day 2 – Flinders Ranges** (BLD) Bushwalkers Paradise! Most of the day is free for a choice of walks, climbs and other adventure at Wilpena Pound. Dirt roads take us through the heart of the Ranges to the historic copper mines of Blinman and our night stop at Angorichina store. Cool off in the nearby waterhole and stay in Hostel style accommodation.
**Day 3 – Parachilna Gorge to William Creek** (BLD) Enter the desert… A very full day! Parachilna Gorge makes a spectacular breakout from the Ranges onto the vast Outback plains. Copley Bakery is the last cappuccino opportunity for 300 kms. Then Leigh Creek coalmines, a visit to eccentric Talc Alf (he’s usually in), the bitumen ends at Lyndhurst, see the Aboriginal ochre pits, Marree’s Old Ghan rail station and the Arabunna Aboriginal Cultural Centre. The Oodnadatta Track follows the dusty trail of the camel caravans and the old Ghan railway to Lake Eyre and the fascinating thermal mound springs. We camp in swags within stumbling distance of William Creek Pub.
**Day 4 – Oodnadatta Track to Coober Pedy** (BLD) Opal Outpost! Encounter a variety of desert landscapes from red dunes to salt pans and gibber plains on the morning drive to Coober Pedy. Lake Cadibarrawirracanna can be a refreshing short detour. Just beyond the Dog Fence, the mining moonscape takes over. We’ll show you about Coober Pedy and give you time to explore and ‘noodle’ (fossick) for opals. Underground bunkhouse accommodation is our ‘digs’ for tonight. Café dinner.
**Day 5: Breakaways to Dalhousie Hot Springs** (BLD) Heavenly Hot Baths Check out the Breakaways, cross the Moon Plain, explore the Painted Desert, visit Oodnadatta township and travel on to one of Australia’s most remote delights, Dalhousie Hot Springs, on the edge of the Simpson Desert. The Springs are just incredible – steaming 35-38C degree thermal mineral spa pools surrounded by shady eucalyptus melaleuca trees. They’re easy to climb into; the bottom is smooth and sandy – with depths similar to a swimming pool! We’ll camp in swags under a million stars, 51 light years from the nearest potentially inhabitable planet – it’s a place where you can think like that after a steaming hot swim!
**Day 6: Dalhousie Hot Springs to Kulgera** (BLD) Beyond the Black Stump! From Dalhousie, remote tracks take us further north to Mt Dare Homestead, Charlotte Waters on the Finke River, New Crown Cattle Station, and the Aboriginal Community of Finke. Their Arts Centre is often open to visitors. Turning west, we visit Lamberts Centre – the geographical belly-button of Australia, marked by a small replica of the National Parliament House flag pole. After experiencing more than 1000 kms of Outback tracks over the past 4 days, we reach Kulgera where we camp for the night.
**Days 7-8: Uluru and Kata Tjuta** (BLD) With a 2 day / 2 night stay, time is on our side… Arrive at our Yulara campsite in time for lunch. Two days and two nights makes a big difference: double chances for sunsets and sunrises; more time for walks and more flexibility in hot weather. We don’t short-change you – as well as plenty of time for Uluru walks and the Aboriginal Cultural Centre, there is ample time to enjoy the Valley of the Winds guided walk at Kata Tjuta. Free time can be used for local indigenous tours, air flights, the swimming pool – or other refreshments.
NOTE: Wayward Bus INCLUDES the Uluru National Park fee ($18).
**Day 9 – Uluru to Kings Creek Cattle Station** (BLD) Moving camp… More time for to complete your Uluru experience this morning. Depart Yulara after lunch for the drive towards Kings Canyon and our campsite at Kings Creek Cattle Station. The afternoon allows time for activities at Kings Creek.
**Day 10 – Kings Canyon to Alice Springs** (BLD) The Finale… Another big morning hike climbs around Kings Canyon for 3 hours. On the Rim Walk you can take in the sandstone domes, cool off in the Garden of Eden pool and stick your head out for views along the Canyon walls. This could be the setting for ‘Lord of the Rings Part IV’! The afternoon travels onto Alice Springs, set amidst the red and green hues of the MacDonnell Ranges, arriving about 6.30pm.
Included: please note as from 01 April 2004 the 25AUD per person National Park fee for Uluru-KataTjuta NP is no longer included and must be paid cash on departure.
Not Included: Important: all accommodation pick ups are to be reserved at least 24 hours before departure of the tour
