9.30am - Depart city we begin our day by heading for the Observatories on Mt. Stromlo. These observatories have long been a part of the scientific endeavours for which the Australian National University community has become known. We will visit the observatory and if you wish, you may like to visit the ''exploratory'' (at your own expense) to become inspired by the wonders of astronomy.
Continuing on from Mt Stromlo we pass through Casuarina Sands, an area beloved of
Canberrans in earlier years as a favourite swimming and picnicking area. Here we cross over the Murrumbidgee River before proceeding through The Cotter Reserve. The Cotter Reservoir was Canberra’s first water supply, the pipeline that supplied the residents has been on our right as we travelled from Mt. Stromlo to Casuarina Sands.
We leave the Cotter and continue through pine forests and then into pasture land before
leaving the main road and arriving at the Tidbinbilla Deep Space Communication Complex. Time to investigate Australia’s involvement in the search into space and the efforts to place man on the moon.
After leaving the Deep Space Complex, we make our way to Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. We will lunch here and have time to investigate the park and meet some of the residents, perhaps you will be able to find a koala, see some kangaroos and many varieties of water fowl and other bird life. We will also call in at the information centre where the Rangers will be able to answer many more of your questions.
Taking leave of the animals we will continue our journey by returning to the city via the
Tuggeranong Valley, before returning you to your accommodation.
