Day 1. Friday. Alert Bay. Departing Victoria by 8:30 am, we wind our way up the east coast of Vancouver Island. (If individuals so request, we arrive at Departure Bay at 10:30 am to pick up arrivals from Vancouver.) During our drive we are afforded spectacular views of the Strait of Georgia and the Coastal Mountains on BC’s mainland. We stop for a lunch break at Campbell River (pop. 30,000), the last good sized town we’ll see for several days. As we enter the Nimpkish Valley, the highway curves around steep hills and forested mountains, passing through scatted villages, and over numerous bridges spanning creeks and rivers. Roosevelt Elk, deer and bear frequent this area. At Port McNeil we board a small ferry for a 30-minute sail to Cormorant Island and the village of Alert Bay, arriving at about 6:00 pm.
Day 2. Saturday. Alert Bay Today we explore the Village of Alert Bay. Over the last century and a quarter, native and non-native communities have grown side by side. Our walking tour includes the Village of Alert Bay, the Ecological Park, the carver’s studio, the ‘Namgis Burial Grounds, and the U''mista Cultural Centre. The potlatch and mask collection in the Cultural Centre is considered to be the one of the world''s finest. The ''Namgis burial grounds remains one of the few remaining places on the coast where totems stand untouched on their original site.
Day 3. Drive to Victoria. We catch the 9:40 am ferry from Alert Bay to Port McNeill, stopping at noon for a picnic lunch and a three hour hike to Ripple Rock. We drop by the Nanaimo Departure Bay ferry terminal in time for those returning to Vancouver to catch 5:00 pm sailing to Horseshoe Bay. Victoria is just two hours south, enabling us to arrive by 7:00 pm.
