This site has housed a Hotel continuously since 1865. The building is now classified as a 'Category 1 Historic Building', which has 'special or outstanding historical or cultural heritage significance or value'. It was purchased by the Christchurch Heritage Trust in 1998 and restored to its former glory. The building now houses a cafe and sports bar on the ground floor, and of course, the New Excelsior Backpackers on the 1st and 2nd floors.
