Set in tropical gardens on an endless stretch of undeveloped beach on the northern shores of freshwater Lake Malawi, Mwaya is the perfect escape.
Mwaya is the idyllic place to unwind under the magnificent African stars ą sunbate on a secluded beach ą watch magnificent fish eagles swoop for their morning catch ą attend a vibrant village festival ą fish in a traditionally hand-carved canoe ą stay in a traditional village and truly experience rural Africa at itĘs finest in a friendly, responsible, and welcoming environment.
MwayaĘs three simple yet spacious traditionally thatched bungalows all have private verandas and stunning views of the shimering bay and distant islands.
Each sleep two in comfortable double beds which are romantically draped by bamboo framed mosquito nets. There is also a built in bay window nook for an accompanying child.
The open-air multi-level sundeck is the perfect place to unwind to the sound of gently lapping waves and placidly gliding canoes.
Anyone wishing to explore the underwater culture of this magnificent lake can go scuba diving with nearby Aquanuts.
The unique underwater rock formations and calm, fresh water make diving off Kande Island perfect for beginner divers.
Just an hour and a half walk up the beach, they also hire reasonably priced water sports equipment such as windsurfers, dinghies, pedlows and fishing gear. Water skiing is also available.
During your stay you also can experience a traditional lunch or dinner with a local family in their home and a guided visit to the school, health clinic and village headmanĘs compound. Fishing excursions with local fishermen in hand carved canoes can also be arranged, as can nature walks and hikes to the nearby forestry reserve.
Mwaya is just an hour from the bustling port town of Nkhata Bay, which offers a thriving curio market, lively night life, interesting street stalls, several budget travellers' lodges and local restaurants.

Guests must bring all food and drink provisions as we no longer offer catering services. A full staff of eight, including two cooks, is on hand to assist with buying local produce, shopping in Chintheche and preparing food if required.
In April and May only we will be offering full catering services at US$3-6 per meal.
Just steps from the beach, there is also plenty of space for additional family and friends to pitch a tent and have magnificent views and cool breezes under the shady mango trees.
