Often called Germany’s “Secret Capital” or the “Athens on the river Isar”, Munich’s history is rich in culture, romance, joy, tragedy and sorrow: in short, all the ingredients for a fascinating tour.
Starting from the heart and soul of the old city: the Marienplatz, site of public protests, executions and of course, the Glockenspiel we’ll conduct you past the elegant colonnades of the twice burned down National Theatre; pass through ancient courtyards where kings and dukes rode; let you feast your eyes at the magnificent Viktualienmarkt food market (Sundays & holidays excepted) and allow you to sample the unique (and intoxicating!) atmosphere of the Hofbräuhaus.
We’ll talk about the Münchner’s love of beer and sausage; about where best to buy Lederhosen or a cuckoo clock; or where the best deals are to be had – in general we’ll cover everything! Religion has always played a big part in Munich’s life, so there are churches galore to admire – the Frauenkirche, Alter Peter, Theatinerkirche to name just a few. The war damage will astound you – it all looks so old, but ….
However there is a darker side to Munich. Both Hitler and Lenin lived here, and close by to the Marienplatz the Nazi party was founded. We’ll point out some places of interest from this period, ie: the Feldherrnhalle, (the site of the bloody end to Hitler’s Beer Hall Putsch) but for those who want to learn more about these turbulent years we recommend our “War, Hitler & Third Reich” tour and/or the tour to the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial.
