**Day 1:** The resort city of Cancun is our starting point. Cancun wasn’t developed until 1970 onwards, where massive international investment ensured it became Mexico’s most famous resort in less than 25 years. It is virtually split into two halves – the ‘Downtown’ area, more authentic and older, or the ‘Hotel Zone’, a strip of resort style Hotels built along the amazing sandy beaches of this area of Quintana Roo. This is also the area where you will find all the major nightclubs, the huge shopping malls and all the fast food branches you could imagine. Cancun is the perfect starting point for a tour of the ‘Ruta Maya’. If you arrive a few days earlier than the tour is due to depart, you could take time to ferry across to beautiful Isla Mujeres and take time off from the bustle of Cancun.

**Day 2:** Tulum. Along the Caribbean Corridor, we come to the only Mayan ruins built on a coastline – Tulum. This an imposing site. The temples here were built in dedication to the ‘Setting Sun’ and the ‘Castillo’, which has a commanding view of the sea, dates back to the 12th Century. Once we have toured the ruins themselves, we will find time to swim, snorkel*, laze on the beach, or enjoy the sun and just relax.

**Day 3, 4 & 5:** We make an early start to cross the border into Belize, formerly known as ‘British Honduras’. Along the way we pass through some amazingly different scenery to arrive at Belize City. From here we take a speedboat across to Caye Caulker, an outer Caye with sand as roads…A small lobster fishing island, Caye Caulker has an amazingly laid back atmosphere. Take your shoes off, swing in a hammock, sip Belizean rum, and enjoy the delicious Belizean culinary delights. There is a snorkel trip to Hol Chan Marine Reserve*, and if you enjoy this, then you can dive* (if Dive qualified) the second longest coral reef in the world. This reef is approximately 175 miles long and is second only to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

**Day 6 & 7:** We cross into Guatemala. Our first stop is the tiny island town of Flores in the middle of Lake Peten where we will arrive in the late afternoon. (We use Flores as our base to visit the nearby ancient ruins of Tikal). The following morning we get the chance to explore the incredible ruins of Tikal - escorted through the jungle by an expert Local Guide - we will have the opportunity to see amazing wildlife such as howler monkey’s, toucans and a huge variety of birds and other animals. Tikal is considered by some as the greatest of all the Mayan cities. Buildings date from 300BC and at its ‘height’, the city stretched to over 100 sq kilometres and had a population of anywhere between 50,000 to 100,000 people. Tikal was abandoned in the 10th century due mainly to waring with neighbouring states, drought and overpopulation. We can spend the afternoon swimming, shopping, walking the island, or hiring canoes* and paddling in the lake

**Day 8 & 9:** Antigua was the old colonial capital of Guatemala until 1773 when it was badly damaged by an earthquake. The city was then abandoned and most treasures were taken to Guatemala City, the new capital. It wasn’t until the early1970’s that efforts were made to preserve the colonial monuments and buildings of Antigua, and major rebuilding began. The city itself is surrounded by three magnificent volcanoes – Agua (Water), Fuego (Fire) and Acatenango. You will have ample opportunity to explore the cobble stoned roads of this enchanting city by joining an excellent Guided City Tour*, hiring bikes and riding through the surrounding villages* or by simply enjoying the ambiance and beauty of this World Heritage Site. This is the finishing point for our tour.
