**COOKING** This trip has a local cook on board the truck. Two meals a day are included while on the truck. We normally have lunch out at local cafes on the way, lots of fun. Meals out are not included.

**CAMPING**: We have made a short note of the campsites we use at the end of each day. Those that are more basic tend to be more scenic; that is especially in the game parks where basic toilets and cold showers are the norm. After a night at such camps we do our best to follow with a hot shower bar campsite. Although in the Masai Mara are two basic nights, but the wild beauty and the animals in the park more than makes up for this.

**CHANGES**: You should be aware that things change frequently in Africa; camps open and close, as do the roads. So there is a chance that the itinerary may have to be changed due to unforeseen circumstances.

**START & BEFORE THE TRIP**: We meet at the Hotel at 9am on the first day of the trip. We recommend you arrive in Nairobi at least the day before, however if you''re there with a few days to spare there''s lots to see and do around the city. There are markets in and around Nairobi a National Museum or you can venture further afield to Karen Blixen''s house, Langata Giraffe Centre or even Nairobi National Park for a first glimpse of African wildlife.

**KENYA**

**Day 1: We leave Nairobi and descend into the Great Rift Valley, pausing at lookouts with amazing views en route. We set up our tents under the trees of Fishermen’s Camp, on the shores of Lake Naivasha. Lake Naivasha is well known for its hippo population that comes ashore every night to graze. The camp is protected by a deep trench, which stops the hippos coming too close.

The camp has a good bar restaurant overlooking the lake and good facilities.

**Day 2:** Nearby is Hell''s Gate National Park where you can hire bikes to take you around the park and see the herds of zebra, buffalo, hartebeest and gazelle. There is some spectacular scenery here, red cliffs, grassy plains and rock towers made of hardened lava, the remains of ancient volcanoes. It''s a hard ride but well worth it. Or you can spend the day on the lakeshore, spotting the rich variety of African birds. There are more species of birds on this one lake that there are in the whole of the UK.

Also on the lake is Elsamere, once the home of Joy Adamson and Elsa the lion of ''Born Free'' fame. Elsamere is now the centre of the Born Free Foundation and you can find out more about their work, see the rare Colobus monkeys and take afternoon tea in the gardens.

**Day 3:** In the morning you can visit Crescent Island – the film location of ‘Out of Africa’, where you can wander with a guide amongst African wildlife in predator-free surroundings. We then depart for Nakuru town and the old working farm of Kembu Camp. .

The camp has good facilities and a bar. We stay here for two nights.

**Day 4:** Lake Nakuru National Park is only 60 kilometres across the valley floor. It has the largest herd of black rhino in East Africa, over a million pink flamingos (who are part time residents) and more than 400 other bird species. ''Nakuru'' means ''place of the waterbuck'' in Swahili and these antelope abound in the park as well as impala, buffalo and warthog. The lions here unusually often sit in the lower branches of trees.

We leave Lake Nakuru after a morning game drive and visiting Nakuru town, we spend the afternoon at Kembu Camp.

**Day 5:** We climb out of the Rift Valley and over the Mau escarpment passing through the Masai capital of Narok. We enter Masai Mara Game Reserve from the east. The Mara must be one of Africa''s most famous Parks, and justifiably so. Here herds of elephants browse among rich, tree-studded grasslands. Thomson’s gazelles, zebra, eland and many more species of savannah game offer a rich choice for the predatory lions, leopards and cheetahs that hunt in the reserve and the surrounding areas.

The camp is a simple site on the edge of the park, among the animals. We stay here for two nights.

**Day 6:** We spend another day game driving in the vast, game-filled plains of the Masai Mara

**Day 7:** We return to Nairobi where we spend the evening feasting at the famous Carnivores Restaurant you then have the opportunity to sample the nightlife of Kenya’s capital city.

We stay in a campsite with full facilities.

**TANZANIA**

**Day 8:** We cross the Masai plains to the border town of Namanga, and depart Kenya for Tanzania. We spend the night among the Mbulu people in the camp at the edge of Karatu town.

The camp has good facilities, a bar and restaurant.

**Day 9:** Ngorongoro Crater is a collapsed, extinct volcano, thousands of years old and now supporting a wide range of animals. We take Land Rovers with a guide to the heart of the crater to see the game. It''s an excellent place getting close to the animals, as in a small area there is a high concentration of animals, which are not afraid of vehicles.

**Day 10:** We re-cross the floor of the Rift Valley to Arusha, the northern capital of Tanzania, stopping in town to change money and have a break before heading out of town to Snake Park Campsite. Here you can ride camels and visit a Masai village.
The camp has good facilities and a bar and restaurant.
Those on the 10-day Essential Gameparks trip will transit via shuttle back to Nairobi – approximately 5 hours. The shuttle bus drops you off at your Hotel or Nairobi Airport.

**Day 11:** Those continuing on, take a midday flight direct to Zanzibar Island by light aircraft, where your Zanzibarian guide awaits you. Over the centuries trade between Africa and Arabia has resulted in the blending of Arabs and Africans into a beautiful Swahili (coastal) culture with wooden sailing dhows crossing the ocean, coconut plantations and fishing villages with mosques on the beaches.
Settle in to your Hotel accommodation, and explore the world heritage sight of Stonetown. We suggest having a sundowner at the famous Africa House, then wandering down to the harbour and sampling the abundance of freshly caught seafood at the Zanzibar fish market.
Your Hotel accommodation is on a double/twin share basis with en suite. Breakfast included.

**Day 12:** What better way to take in the sights and smells and history of the Spice Island, than partaking in a Spice Tour? Your guide takes you to visit the old Slave Chambers of Stonetown then onto the plantations. Sample the fruit and spices of this tropical island whilst learning how they are grown and cultivated. The tour ends with a locally prepared lunch nearby. You are then transferred to your north of the island
Accommodation is in beach bungalows with en suites based on a double/twin share basis (breakfast included), by the beach and restaurants. We stay here for two nights.

**Day 13:** Dive or snorkel with the abundant sea life in the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean. Or just let time pass you by as you relax on the palm fringed white sands of this island paradise.

**Day 14:** You are transferred to the Zanzibar airport for a twenty-minute flight to Dar es Salaam, the end of your trip.
