**Day 1** We will depart directly for Dali by bus. We will visit this wonderful lakeside town surrounded by mountains that are snowcapped during winter months and will explore the town''s cobbled lanes and wooden houses. After visiting the Three Pagodas, you will have a chance to wander through the old markets and eat Western food on the ''Foreigners'' Street''. ( B, L)
**Day 2** We will take a boat across Erhai Lake to visit a temple on the far side and get off on a small island where we can wander through the village lanes. Later we travel to the village of Xihou for a closer look at traditional Bai architecture and handicrafts. We will be able to go into the local homes and watch batik fabrics being prepared, and afterwards shop from the original artisans.( L )
**Day 3** On our last day in Dali, we will either visit one of the colorful early morning markets of the Bai minority people, who are influenced by their Burmese neighbors, if they are open, or take a day-long horse trip up into the mountains towering over the Dali valley. ( L )
**Day 4** We will take a local bus three hours to the north to Lijiang. This is the home of the Naxi minority people, a matrilineal society descended from Tibetan nomads. Lijiang is a serene and beautiful town with a large old quarter. The town''s backdrop is the 5500 meter high snow-capped Jade Dragon Mountain, and we will view it from Black Dragon Pool Park with one of the most famous views in southwest China. We will also have time to wander through the quaint and charming old town with its narrow streets and local crafts. Here too you may sample Western or local foods.( B, L)
**Day 5** We will spend the day getting to Jade Snow Mountain and ascending the highest and longest chairlift in the world to a glacier park at over 15,000 feet. This is the southern-most glacier in the Northern Hemisphere and the climb up to the lookout, though extremely taxing for a short time, is well worth the fascinating view of a glacier up close, as only mountain climbers see them. We will also look around the forested base of the mountain with its rivers and glaciated lakes.( L )
**Day 6** We head by bus again north for five hours to the Tibetan town of Zhongdian, at 3200 meters. Here we will begin our visit with a look at the old town and the minority cultures of the Tibetans, Bai and Naxi peoples. ( B, L )
**Day 7** We will leave town for a day of exploring, first to Songzanlin temple, a 300-year old complex. We then go on to Napa Hai, a lake in a nature preserve where we can see some of the native bird species. ( B, L )
**Day 8** We will take another day tour south of Zhongdian to see natural limestone formations at Tiansheng, a hot spring, another ancient temple (Dabao), and another lake (Bita Hai) set in a pristine landscape. This mountainous area is lovely and the scenery is wonderful. ( B, L, D )
**Day 9** We will fly back to Kunming from Zhongdian, where you can catch a connecting flight to your next destination or home.( B )
