Five Day Kakadu and Arnhem Land Safari

DEPARTS: FRI in DRY SEASON Maximum 9 Passengers
Day 1. Darwin - Kakadu
Pick you up at your Darwin accommodation at 6.30am and drive east to Fog Dam. Start the day with a relaxing walk through a monsoonal rainforest and wetland areas. Take this oppurtunity to bird-watch, spot reptiles and aquatic plants. Learn about Aboriginal bush survival techniques in a billabong and floodplain environment. Take a private boat cruise on the nearby Adelaide River where you will see plenty of saltwater crocodiles up close. Learn about these incredible creatures that have survived virtually unchanged for 190 million years. Continue on to Kakadu National Park and view the South Alligator River, the largest in the Park. Walk up to Ubirr Rock and the X-ray art galleries that predominate the area. Learn about European impact on the local Aboriginal people whilst taking in one of the best sunsets in Kakadu. Set up camp at Sandy Billabong with a campfire dinner and an early evening walk.

Day 2. Twin Falls - Jim Jim Falls
Break camp and 4WD to Twin Falls. Bushwalk to the top of the escarpment to explore the sandstone country. Swim in remote rockholes with a breathtaking view over the Twin Falls Gorge. Have lunch and relax before walking to the bottom and paddling up the gorge on an air mattress to the beach. Return to Jim Jim campground and watch sunset before another great campfire dinner.

Day 3. Jim Jim Falls - Sandy Billabong
A short 4WD to Jim Jim Falls and walk up the steep scree slope to the top of the escarpment. A walk across the massive plateau brings us to a waterfall on top of Jim Jim Falls. Lunch is had on top of the 212 metre high falls then have a swim in the top plunge pools. Proceed to the bottom of the falls and swim in the pool at the base of the towering cliffs. 4WD to Yellow Waters for sunset and make camp at Sandy Billabong. Enjoy dinner under the Southern Cross constellation.

Day 4. Narwourlandja Lookout
Drive to Narwourlandja Lookout where you can view Nourlandjie Rock and the Lightning Man Dreaming. Visit the Nourlandjie Art Galleries and learn of the Warramal Peoples spirit figures Narmagon, Narmadjok, Narbulwinbulwin and the Mimi Spirits. Walk into Gubarra Springs to the Melaleuca forest and swim in the springs. Drive to Barramundi Falls (Maguk) and take a short walk through the rainforest to the drop pools. Return to Sandy Billabong for camp and dinner.

Day 5. Arnhem Land - Darwin
Break camp and head towards Arnhem Land. We will go into the exclusive Mikinj Valley where the magnificent northern floodplain joins the ancient sandstone country. This is tough 4WD country and necessitates some exploring by foot. Rock art over 20000 years old is abundant and the scenery spectacular. Have lunch at Sandbar Billabong before exploring the valley further. T his pristine isolated environment is the perfect finale to our safari. Return to Darwin after sunset for a group dinner.

What to bring
Walking shoes, hat, water bottle, camera and film, daypack, bathers and towel, sunscreen, insect repellent, Park entry fee ($16.25AUD), limited luggage.
We supply
All meals, snacks and cold drinking water, vegetarian meals on request, camping equipment including swags. Sleeping bags available for $10.00 hire charge.
