Uluru and Kings Canyon are amazing but there’s much more to discover in Australia’s Outback…
‘Face the Outback’ is our 8 day overland journey from the Southern Ocean to the Centre following the trails of aboriginal culture, European exploration, camel caravans led by Afghan traders, miners gambling their lives with picks and shovels - and the original Ghan Railway. It’s a trip that lets you appreciate Central Australia in a different perspective to the average visitor because you’ve really travelled to get there!
**Day 1 Adelaide to Wilpena Pound (LD** Clare Valley and Flinders Ranges... From Adelaide, our way north weaves through the hillside vineyards of the Clare Valley plus a string of little country towns. A stop at Clare gives you the chance to sample wines at two of the top wineries. Further north you’ll enjoy expansive views of the Flinders Ranges as we approach Wilpena Pound, one of Australia’s most magnificent natural features and our campsite for tonight.
**Day 2 Flinders Ranges (BLD)** Bushwalkers Paradise! From our Wilpena Pound campsite you have a choice of spectacular walks and challenging climbs, including Mt Ohlsen Bagge and the ultimate, St Mary’s Peak. The views are breathtaking. After lunch, dirt roads take us through the heart of the Ranges to the historic copper mines of Blinman and our night stop at Angorichina Store. Cool off in the nearby waterhole and stay in Hostel style accommodation.
**Day 3 Parachilna Gorge to William Creek (BLD)** Enter the desert… A very full day! Parachilna Gorge makes a spectacular breakout from the Ranges onto the vast Outback plains. Copley Bakery is the last cappuccino opportunity for 300 kms. Then Leigh Creek coalmines, a visit to eccentric Talc Alf (he’s usually in), the bitumen ends at Lyndhurst, see the Aboriginal ochre pits, Marree’s Old Ghan rail station and the Arabunna Aboriginal Cultural Centre. The Oodnadatta Track follows the dusty trail of the camel caravans and the old Ghan railway to Lake Eyre and the fascinating thermal mound springs. We camp in swags within stumbling distance of William Creek Pub.
**Day 4 Oodnadatta Track to Coober Pedy (BLD)** Opal Outpost! Encounter a variety of desert landscapes from red dunes to salt pans and gibber plains on the morning drive to Coober Pedy. Lake Cadibarrawirracanna can be a refreshing short detour. Just beyond the Dog Fence, the mining moonscape takes over. We’ll show you about Coober Pedy – underground house, mine tour, opal cutting, an underground church – and still give you time to explore and ‘noodle’ (fossick) for opals. Underground bunkhouse accommodation is our ‘digs’ for tonight. Café dinner.
**Day 5 The Breakaways to Uluru (BLD)** Breakaways and Roadhouse Blues We roam the colourful Breakaways site of Mad Max III before devouring 700kms of hot black bitumen on the Stuart and Lasseter Highways, via Marla and Erldunda to Uluru. By special invitation, we may go off-highway onto the ‘AP Lands’ to call in at Iwantja Arts – subject to cultural circumstances on the day. As we go north, you’ll notice the vegetation increasing – even the Northern Territory looks like the botanic gardens compared to Outback South Australia! Arrive in time for sunset viewing and set up camp for two nights in our well-serviced campground.
**Days 6 & 7 Uluru and Kata Tjuta (BLD)** Time is on our side… Two nights makes a big difference: double chances for sunsets and sunrises; more time for walks and more flexibility in hot weather. We don’t short-change you – as well as plenty of time for Uluru walks and the Aboriginal Cultural Centre, there is time to do the Valley of the Winds walk (we guide) at Kata Tjuta. Free time can be used for local indigenous tours, air flights, the swimming pool – or other refreshments. The drive towards Kings Canyon takes 3.5 hours and we camp at Kings Creek Cattle Station. Option to swag tonight.
**Day 8 Kings Canyon to Alice Springs (BLD)** The Finale… Another big morning hike tackles Kings Canyon. On the Rim Walk you’ll see the sandstone domes of the Lost City, cool off in the Garden of Eden pool and stick your head out for views along the walls of the Canyon. Carefully! The afternoon travels onto Alice Springs, set amidst the MacDonnell Ranges, arriving about 6.30pm
Stopovers While northbound Tours travel through as one group, on southbound Tours we give travellers the flexibility to break the journey. If our Outback Tours can assist your special travel plans, best to talk with us.
