**Durban City Tour**
The tour is a combination of driving and walking which will highlight the unique diversity of cultures surrounding the Durban City. The tour starts by getting you right out the tourist track and into the heart of the Indian community. We visit the Temple of Understanding in Chatsworth, which is also known as the Centre of Spiritual Realization. It is in Chatsworth we realize the effects of apartheid and where your guide will introduce you to the history of people such as Mahatma Gandhi.
Leaving the past we head back into the city to visit the Victoria Street Market and also an area known as the Warwick Street Junction. It is here that over three hundred thousand commuters come in daily by bus, taxi and foot to go about their routine. Many people come from far rural areas to buy food or look for work as well as putting in a local visit to the MUTI MARKET/TRADITIONAL HEALERS MARKET, which is our next stop. Meeting up with a local community guide we start the next step of our tour. At the traditional healers market a point to consider is that researchers show an estimated four tons of trees and plants are cut and chopped weekly all in the aid of medicine. The area is also home to the largest sector of informal trade and your guide will demonstrate how shopkeepers and sidewalk traders work and live together in harmony.
Moving on up the hill into the up-market suburbs we visit a unique collection of African artifacts as well as old colonial furniture brought to South Africa during the early days of the Byrne Settlers. The Killie Campbell museum is well known but can usually only be viewed by appointment because of the significance of the Campbell family and the highly treasured artifacts. Students this is a must as it is also home to an amazing research library on Zulu culture and South African history. {NOTE THIS IS NOT AVAILABLE ON SATURDAY’S}
A drive along the beaches on the Golden Mile and an opportunity to hear the local lifeguards inform us on their duties and the various wave conditions in Durban. We also take time out to see the Vasco Da Gama clock and Dick King statue in the harbour area. This will lead us onto the various beautiful old buildings in Durban such as the City Hall, the Post Office, Durban tourist junction and many others leading up to our next stop, which is the Kwa Muhle Museum.
The Kwa Muhle museum or Apartheid Museum is housed in the old department of native affairs building and where each room bears testimony to the power struggle of the apartheid years. The museum also gives us an excellent background on the local township that we will be visiting in the afternoon, which is known as Cato Manor.
Please note that guests doing only the city overview, will be dropped back at their acommodation before the rest of the group moves on to the Cato manor for a Zulumeal and the township tour. Guests can extend to do the full tour at the full price.
As we head on the community guide will lead us through each area and the development of Cato Manor. The history and availability of facilities will all be discussed demonstrating how the free housing schemes work. South Africa and the European Union are involved in the housing projects and it is worth a visit to see the houses as we are treated to a Zulu meal in a very hospitable and social community. A final drink and dance with the locals will close off the evening as we return to Durban at approximately 7:00pm.
Please note that the township tour is a community project partnership between Tekweni Ecotours, the local community and their tourism association. The tour creates employment for approximately 5 to 10 people each time we visit.
