This trip departs from San Francisco At 8pm. We breeze overnight through the Central Valley, stopping around 2am in Bakersfield, CA at the greyhound station (1820 18th at F st.) (Possible Mojave, CA pick-up at 4am). Begin your desert adventure departing from San Francisco at 8PM with an overnight drive to our country’s favorite National Park. (Pick-ups in Bakersfield are also possible) Wake up in a desert world for breakfast and a soak at Tecopa Hot Springs, where we’ll meet our guide-naturalist for the trip.
Upon our arrival into Death Valley, a guided 2.5-mile afternoon hike from Zabriskie Point will take you down into the sunset and through brilliantly colored and fantastically eroded badlands. Afterwards, we''ll visit Badwater, which at 282 feet below sea-level is the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere! Everyone will help prepare a delicious dinner at our nearby campsite and sleep out under the stars at sea level, 250 miles inland from the Pacific.
After breakfast on day 2, we''ll hike Mosaic Canyon before driving north through Death Valley to Ubehebe Crater. Late afternoon finds us at the Death Valley Dunes at their most photogenic! The dune adventure continues after dark with guided stargazing, then it’s back to camp for dinner and homemade music.
On day 3, we head west through more spectacular desert scenery, stopping at Father Crowley Point''s otherworldly vista. Continuing on through the sparse groves of Joshua Trees, we''ll come into full view of the sheer eastern escarpment of the Sierra Nevada and Mt. Whitney (at 14,495 feet it''s the highest peak in the contiguous 48 states)! A night ride brings us back to S.F. around 7AM Tuesday (drop-offs in Bakersfield available).
NOTE: Due to Death Valley campground noise curfews, only the coyotes can howl after 10 PM. Winter weather in Death Valley is going to be better than just about anywhere, but do come prepared with a hat and sunglasses for the days, and with warm stuff for chilly nights. There will be spots to pitch a tent if you''d like to bring one. Average max/min temperatures are 76/48F in November, 65/39F in December and January, 72/46F in February, 80/53F in March, 90/62F in April. Average rainfall in Death Valley is 1.9 inches per year, but one trip we got it all. This trip includes Tortoise transportation, park and camping fees, as well as all meals....an excellent value!
Not Included: * There is an additional $41 food fund payable at departure*This fund pays for roughly 70% of breakfasts and dinners, as well as local, state and national park entry fees. This sample itinerary is a general overview. We cannot guarantee any one destination
