Get ready to bunk down in our sleeper coach as we depart San Francisco at 8pm for this ‘Best of the West” canyon adventure! After a brief stop in Bakersfield to pick up more passengers, we are southern California bound where rustic high desert and a gourmet breakfast await us. Shape up for this week’s trekking with a hike to remote hot springs. Here, you can soak in one or all of the multiple temperature springs and then refresh yourself with a swim in its neighboring river.
We then venture to the Grand Canyon, where for three days the bus will remain parked so as to maximize your hiking options into this natural wonder! Visible from space, it took the Colorado River millions of years to carve out this multi-hued breathtaking spectacle! Use this time to hike down to the banks of the Colorado river where you can camp out under a thick blanket of falling stars and escape from the morning heat with a dip into the river''s icy cool waters...or enjoy day hikes to and from our camp at the South Rim.
On the afternoon of day four, we''re back on the bus making our way to Canyon de Chelly, the ancestral home of the Navajo Indians. Spend your afternoon uncovering the older habitations that are tucked into the canyon walls either on foot or by taking a guided horseback ride. We then depart for Utah where we''ll sleep with the deities near the Valley of the Gods. You''ll also find time to take an optional jeep tour in Monument Valley.
Later, clean yourself off with a plunge into Lake Powell, one of the best swims on the entire trip! After a night drive, open the door to a morning in Bryce Canyon National Park. Famous for its pink and red limestone spires and breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, you’ll have the day to get lost in this surreal landscape.
Last but not least is the canyon of Zion National Park where marbled domes and statuesque pillars meet the oak and maple adorned Virgin River. Climb up to Angel’s Landing and see the point of view that inspired its name, or hike to the cathedral-like “Narrows” where the canyon walls seem to touch each other above you.
After dinner, prepare for an evening of surfing the dazzling wave of Las Vegas electricity! You can rest and recharge as we travel overnight into California, returning to San Francisco the next afternoon.
