Accommodation is a mixture of self help camping and hostels. Some long drives on and off rough dirt roads.
Day 1: Depart Cairns early to visit the Great Barrier Reef (*at own expense) where you can snorkel or do a resort dive before heading back to Cairns for our overnight accommodation. (B, L )
Day 2: Leaving the coastal plains we head inland to the Atherton Tablelands, arriving at Undarra Lava Lodge in the evening, home to the world’s largest and longest lava tube system. (B, L, D)
Day 3: An early morning tour of the Lava Tubes before heading to Cobbold Gorge* for a boat cruise through the spectacular sandstone cliffs that are only 2m wide. (B, L, D) (* dependant on season)
Day 4: It’s then onto Burketown via Karumba*. At Normanton you’ll come face to face with a replica of the largest croc ever shot in the area, it’s a whopping 8.63m long! (B,L,D)
Day 5: Next we head towards Lawn Hill National Park, one of the most beautiful national parks in Australia. We spend the day exploring this stunningly beautiful oasis. (B, L, D)
Day 6 - 8: Leaving Lawn Hill it’s off to Mataranka Thermal Springs via the Gulf Track. You’ll truly get an understanding of the expanse and isolation of the outback. Float away in the thermal springs for the afternoon. (B, L, D)
Day 9: Mataranka to Katherine Gorge. Here we hire canoes and explore this world famous gorge at our own leisure. An afternoon spent exploring this area is fantastic. (B, L, D)
Day 10: Leaving Katherine we venture towards Darwin, where you’ve got time to explore the city for yourself. (B, L )
Day 11 ?13: The next 3 days are spent exploring the world class National Heritage wonder Kakadu, spotting wildlife, swimming in the waterholes and visiting aboriginal rock art sites. After a couple of full days it’s back to Darwin in the evening. (B,L, D)
