Port St Johns
South Africa
Paradise in Pondoland is where you can experience real Africa, magical people, an abundantly cultural area and addictively laid-back atmosphere. You can also mingle amongst the hospitality which rings true of the Pondo people.
Port St. Johns is centred in the heart of Pondoland, a paradise beyond your imagination. It embodies the intercultural experience that many have travelled far and wide around South Africa to find, and this is where they find exactly that!
The lush coastal forests, rolling green hills dotted with Xhosa huts, grandiose mountains, dazzling rivers, breath-taking waterfalls, outstretched beaches and the friendly local people will leave you awe-inspired and youÆll soon agree that you have indeed arrived in paradise!
Port St. Johns is a little coastal town with an identity of its own, and the only destination on the much-envied Transkei coastline not borne from tourism demand. In days of old it was a thriving port, but with the eradication over time of the hippopotamus and silting up of the river mouth, the port went into decline. Local communities and town folk alike looked to tourism as a source of income for sustainable living.
You will therefore find in Port St. Johns a distinct feeling of actual living and not the glam of a holiday town. Here you will meet ærealÆ people working together, making a living by sharing their homes and the paradise theyÆre privileged to be in and preserving this beautiful part of the world while doing so.
We are perched on one of the hills over-looking Second Beach and are surrounded by a jungle of forest. Port St. Johns has two beaches, and Second Beach is the place to be for swimming and surf. Its perfect for those lazy relaxing days when doing as little as possible is a priority on the to-do list.
Facilities: We offer scrumptious dinners and breakfasts everyday, but also accommodate for the self-caterer. In season, we offer delicious seafood meals fresh from the sea, and when the weather permits we have sociable barbeques in our fire pit.
Dinner prices range between R25 and R55 per meal. Breakfast prices range between R8 and R25 per meal. We offer free tea, coffee and sugar
Enjoy a few drinks in our indoor/outdoor bar which has been built in the Xhosa style with an interesting modern adaptation. You can also have a couple of friendly games of pool on our free pool table.
Internet facilities are available.
Two small spaza shops are within walking distance for your bare necessity shopping, but there is transport available into town daily. Unfortunately we do not accept travellers cheques or foreign currencies, but there is a bank in town for foreign exchange. ATMs and a post office are also in the town..
You might not know this yet, but we have the answer to the question youÆll be asking soon after arriving when the magical energy possessed in this part of the world takes hold of your common senses and you start re-assessing your travel plans: Can I stay longer?à..Yes.
