15 Day COSTA RICA LOP With Green Tortoise Adventure Travel Departing from San Jose , Costa Rica

Prices from around $599

Guanacaste: (Day One) We start our journey with a scenic drive to Playa Panama on the Pacific Coast. Our beach campsite allows you to pitch your tent with a view of the protected bay and the tropical sunset! Swim the warm, calm waters, walk the beach and search for shells or walk around the point at low tide for warm water snorkeling. We''ll enjoy the first of many great cookouts before repairing to the open-air beachside cantina for a lesson in Salsa dancing from the pros!

Climate: Hot, dry, windy, foothills and lowlands.

Rincon De La Vieja: (Day Two) A day trip to this National Park from our beach campsite is a highlight of the trip. This magical place offers some of the best hiking of the trip. The wildlife abounds here: monkeys, armadillos, cotamundi, and toucans are just some of the parks inhabitants. It is less visited than most parks due to its remoteness. There are numerous hikes after the two kilometer walk to the park entrance station. The best trek is two hours each way to El Cangrejo, a waterfall nestled into the African Savanna-type tundra. There is a small hot spring trickling into the swimming hole at the base of the waterfall. You may also opt for a two-hour loop past bubbling ''paint pots,'' or other moderate hikes of your choice. We spend all day here and then return to our campsite at Playa Panama for the night.

Climate: Hot, dry, windy, temperate forest.

Pacific Beaches: (Days Three through Six) On our way to Playa Samara we pass through the town of Santa Cruz to restock and make a stop at the bank. Our beachfront ''castle'' campsite is a great place to work on your tan, run a horse on the beach, collect shells, and maybe even spot nesting sea turtles by starlight. You may even have a chance to view feeding crocodiles, take a nature hike, or an ultra-light flight for a bird''s eye view of the bay. Our campsite is located within walking distance or short cabride to a town with restaurants, bars, and souvenirs.

Climate: Very hot, ususally dry tropical rainforest, steady ocean breeze, surrounding foothills.

Arenal: (Day Seven) The Arenal region has plenty to offer. Our base camp for two nights and one day is an easy walk from the town of Fortuna. An optional canopy tour ($40) is offered in the morning which will give you the opportunity to soar through the jungle canopy after a short horseback ride into primevil rainforest. We''ll spend our evening at a volcanic hot spring with a poolside bar, botanical gardens, and a fantastic restaurant.By night, if we are lucky, the volcano will erupt offering you a glimpse from your tent of the spewing molten lava.

Climate: Warm to hot days, cool nights, high chance of rain. wet, tropical rainforest.

Sarapiqui: (Days Eight and Nine) Our base camp in Sarapiqui is right on the river. The campsite is in the midst of a botanical garden, and our gracious hosts also offer the option of staying in a cabin. There are numerous activities offered here. The two-and-a-half hour guided nature walk at a nearby private reserve is offered by Selva Verde Lodge a few kilometers down the road. The knowledgeable guide will help you recognize flora and fauna the untrained eye would miss. Rafting the class three whitewater is a fun and safe ride on one of Costa Rica''s most pristine rivers. The rafts suit the narrow river and offer a thrilling ride with experienced local guides. Kayaking the lower class one stretches of the river puts you closer in touch with the river and its surroundings. You may opt for a hike to a hidden waterfall. Scaling the cliff by rope to the clear pool demands an adventurous and fit traveler. The town of La Virgen stretches four kilometers along the road in front of the campsite. General stores supply this farming community with the basic necessities and a few bars provide a limited night life, some offering dances on weekends.

Climate: Very high chance of rain (300 inches per year). Rainforest.

Tortuguero River Trip: (Days Ten through Twelve) From Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui we board a 40-foot motorized, covered boat, with bathroom, for a six-hour trip on calm waters to Tortuguero. While traveling the lower sections of the Sarapiqui, the Rio Sucio and the Rio San Juan we''ll make a brief stop at a riverside border station in Nicaragua to have lunch and get our passports stamped. Watch for toucans, parrots, iguanas, sloths, turtles, monkeys and crocodiles along the way! The remote village of Tortuguero , accessible only by boat or plane, is bordered by the Caribbean Ocean on the East, jungle canals on the West and the Parque Nacional Tortuguero to the South. The best way to experience the national park is in a native dugout canoe with a local guide/naturalist - early in the morning for the most wildlife! In season, you may even get the chance to view sea turtles nesting on the beach! After a day and a half strolling the friendly footpaths of Tortuguero we board our river boat once again and journey the inter-coastal waterway to the town of Moin where the bus has driven from Sarapiqui to meet us.

Climate: Hot, high humidity, chance of rain.

Cahuita: (Days Twelve through Fifteen) The Jamaican influence on the Caribbean coast is prevalent here. Bob Marley competes with the crashing waves of black beach while monkeys howl with the surf of white beach. Our laid-back host at the campground offers cabinas and the use of his bar. The 20 minute walk to town gives us a more relaxed atmosphere. Slow moving sloths may be your main company on a two-hour walk through the national park, or maybe having a beer with the folks in town is more your style. A local tour company offers day trips to Indian villages in the mountains backdropping the area. Bikes and snorkeling gear are also available for rent in town. Another option is taking a trip to an organic permaculture farm near the border of Panama. Our last day is spent driving through the Braullio Carillo National Park and into San Jose.

Climate: Hot, high humidity, chance of rain.
